Yosemite National Park is a MUST see. Its beauty is vast! If you are looking for beautiful scenery you have picked one of the best locations. When you see epic pictures like the one above you can't help but stare in awe. If you have made it to this post it is because you are interested in taking pictures in Yosemite or have already booked a shoot (hopefully with me 😉), and want to know how to prep for your photoshoot. Here are some of my tips to ensure you have a smooth session and have all of the gear and items necessary for the hike!
CHECK THE WEATHER
As well all know the weather can be very unpredictable. It is crucial that you keep in mind what the weather is going to be like on the day(s) you will be there. You might think this one is a no brainer, but I assure you many people forget this key step. You don't want to show up in a tank top and shorts when the weather is hitting below 30 degrees after sunset.
GET THE APPROPRIATE PERMITS
You are required to get a Day-Use Permit to enter the park. Get the permit ahead of time and make sure to screenshot the permit and have the picture easily accessible on your phone, or print out the permit. I highly recommend that you print it out just in case.
Here is the link to where you can buy the permit: https://www.recreation.gov/timed-entry/10086745
PRINT OUT THE DIRECTIONS
I am a planner and someone who thinks of the worst case scenarios (sucks to be me, I know lol) For that reason I also highly advise that you print out the directions or take screenshots JUST IN CASE!
SET A SPECIFIC PLACE & TIME TO MEET
As you drive into Yosemite it is not unlikely that you may lose service. For that reason it is a good idea to set a specific location in the park and time to meet with your photographer.
(As your photographer I will make sure to have that ready (: )
Depending on where in Yosemite you will be taking pictures it is important to pack accordingly. If you are planning on hiking a good amount, especially if you are headed to Taft Point I suggest that you take these following items if you are planning a sunrise or sunset shoot:
- Extra batteries for your flashlights
- Head lamps
- Hiking shoes
- A sturdy backpack
- Water & Snacks
- Biodegradable toilet paper
- The clothes and shoes you are planning on wearing to your photoshoot
- Wear a casual/ comfortable outfit for the hike
- HIKING SHOES *please don't hike in flip flops
- Portable charger
- BUG SPRAY
- And maybe a bottle of champagne to pop once we reach the beautiful view!!
GET THERE EARLIER
If you haven't been to Yosemite before it is a good idea to get there WAY earlier from your session time so you can get familiar with the area. The drive to Yosemite from where I live is 4.5 hours! If I have a sunset shoot I am leaving early in the morning to make sure I get there with enough time to unwind, meet my couple, and start the hike to Taft Point. The hike to Taft Point is not strenuous, but it is still long! You don't want to miss the sunrise or sunset so plan to start your hike earlier rather than later.
It may be crowded!
Yosemite, specifically Taft Point is very popular for photoshoots. Expect there to be other people trying to get the perfect shot. Another reason to get there earlier.
Last but not least:
RESPECT THE PARK
Make sure to respect the wildlife, respect nature, and pick up after yourself.
Be a good human!
